Get to Know Habitat for Humanity Hamilton County

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton County, Indiana is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. HHHC was incorporated in May of 1990 and has since built 51 new homes for more than 175 family members throughout the county.

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton County is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HHHC seeks to eliminate poverty housing in Hamilton County and to make decent housing a matter of conscience and action. Currently there are more than 12,000 families in Hamilton County living in substandard or inadequate housing.

Habitat Families

HHHC applicants must be Hamilton County residents for at least one year with a gross family income between 35% and 75% of the median income for Hamilton County. An applicant cannot have filed for or finalized bankruptcy within the last year. Families must currently be residing in conditions deemed inadequate or unsafe, too small for the family, in temporary housing or residing with another family, or spending more than 50% of gross income on housing.

Habitat’s Community Involvement

Inadequate housing is directly related to lower educational attainment for children and a greater likelihood of unemployment and poverty as they become adults. These factors often result in a lack of contribution to their community and as a result strain state and federal resources. HFHHC helps promote community involvement by recruiting volunteers from local churches, businesses and organizations. All HHHC homeowners are required to put 306 hours of “sweat equity” into their homes as well as other community projects.

Habitat’s Results

Habitat kids are less likely to drop out of school, need foster care, welfare support, government-subsidized housing, employment training through social services, a shelter, homelessness services or rent assistance. Parents are more likely to go to church, stay married, hold a full-time job and volunteer in the community. None of Habitat’s families in Hamilton County have defaulted on their loan and all of the HHHC children have finished high school or received their GED and either gone to college or trade school.
